A 16-year-old from Detroit was bound over to Macomb County Circuit Court in connection with allegedly fleeing police, resulting in a fatal crash that killed a pregnant mother in Sterling Heights.

A 16-year-old from Detroit was bound over to Macomb County Circuit Court in connection with allegedly fleeing police, resulting in a fatal crash that killed a pregnant mother in Sterling Heights.

It is alleged that on Saturday (Aug. 12), police attempted a traffic stop on the teen while he was traveling northbound on Van Dyke Avenue at 15 Mile Road.

Police say the teen allegedly fled police, driving recklessly. The 16-year-old ran a red light and hit a family. A mother and her unborn child were killed in the crash.

The teen was unharmed.

The 16-year-old was charged with second-degree murder (life felony), gross negligence causing the death of a fetus (15-year felony), fleeing and eluding in the first-degree (15-year felony), and two counts of reckless driving causing serious injury (five-year felony).

The teen, who is being charged as an adult, was bound over to the Macomb County Circuit Court and is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday, (Feb. 7) at 8:30 a.m. by Macomb County Circuit Court. The teen remains in the Juvenile Justice Center.

“In this case, the juvenile’s alleged actions sadly led to the tragic loss of a mother and her unborn child,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido. “This choice underscores our steadfast commitment to accountability and the well-being of the public.”
