Extremely cold temperatures are causing slew of crashes across Metro Detroit

Emergency crews responded to several crashes Tuesday

A slew of car crashes across Metro Detroit have occurred due to the extremely cold temperatures.

Emergency crews responded to several of those car crashes Tuesday (Jan. 16) due to the icy conditions.

“The accidents are really outrageous,” said driver Artelia West.

Our chopper hovered above several crashes in Metro Detroit from I-94 to the Lodge Freeway.

A car almost slammed into another car stopped in a lane on the Lodge.

The man, standing outside of the car, saw it coming and moved out of the way.

“The roads are really slippery,” said driver Brent Mayberry. “But I’m a cautious driver. So I am doing my best to make sure I don’t get in an accident.”

“Don’t try to overdo it,” said driver Tony Lucas. “Don’t try to rush. Wherever you’re trying to get to, it will be there when you get there.”

Road crews have been doing their best to improve road conditions.

“When you see our big orange trucks out there doing their job, give us plenty of room. Don’t crowd the plow as they say,” said Scott Cabauatan with the Wayne County Department of Public Services.

But there’s only so much they can do in these frigid temperatures.

“People think it is just the big storms are the hard ones,” said Craig Bryson with the Oakland County Road Commission. “Big storms, we just plow. It is the little ones like this, with these temperatures, that we have so much trouble with. When the temperatures are in the single digits, the salt essentially does nothing.”
