OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – Imagine going to bed thinking you won $50,000 and waking up to find out you actually won $200,000.

James Allen, 63, of Commerce Township, matched four white balls and the Powerball to win an initial $50,000 prize. Since he had paid for the Power Play option, his prize was multiplied for a total of $200,000.

“I checked my ticket and went to bed thinking I had won $50,000 because I forgot about the Powerplay add-on game,” said Allen. “When I woke up in the morning, I checked again and realized I had actually won $200,000.”

The winning numbers were 10-11-19-26-27, and Powerball 07. Allen purchased the winning ticket at Hoops Food, Sport, and Spirits, located at 2705 Lapeer Road in Auburn Hills.

“Every time I play Powerball, I pick my kids’ birthdays. This time, it really paid off,” Allen said.

Allen recently visited Michigan Lottery headquarters to claim his prize. He said he plans to use the money to pay bills.

How to play Powerball

Powerball tickets are $2 per play. Powerball drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. at the Florida Lottery draw studio in Tallahassee.

Tickets are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Tickets may be purchased until 9:45 p.m. the day of the drawing at retailers throughout the state. Tickets also may be purchased online at MichiganLottery.com.

Jackpot winners can choose to receive their prize in an annuity, paid in 30 graduated payments over 29 years, or a lump sum payment. Both advertised prize options are before federal and jurisdictional taxes.
