Grieving family seeks answers after loved one is killed in Canton hit-and-run

Michael Chiverton, 43, died around 10:40 p.m. on Michigan Avenue near I-275

CANTON, Mich. – A grieving family is seeking answers after their loved one was killed in a hit-and-run in Canton.

Michael Chiverton, 43, died on the scene after being hit Thursday, Jan. 11, around 10:40 p.m. on Michigan Avenue near I-275.

Canton police said the driver fled the scene in their vehicle and is still at large.

According to investigators, the vehicle that struck the man was possibly a black Toyota Camry from the model years of 2010-2011.

Chiverton’s parents are pleading for witnesses or the person responsible to come forward.

“I’m not a vengeful person, but I want justice for him, and I think we’re going to need that for closure,” Chiverton’s mom, Rebecca Steward, said.

Steward said Chiverton was a father of six and had a grandchild on the way.

The family said Chiverton was staying in a hotel on Michigan Avenue and was likely hit walking to or from the hotel.

Anyone who was a witness to the crash or has information about the vehicle or person involved is asked to contact the Canton Police Department at 734-394-5400 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-Speak Up.
