Do not occupy order issued for apartment building in Troy

Troy city management launched operation with Oakland County to help people vacating their apartments

TROY, Mich. – A Troy apartment building was hit with a do not occupy order.

The order was issued at the Troy Place apartment near West Big Beaver Road and Troy Center Drive.

Residents told Local 4 on Friday (Jan. 19) that they had been without heat for days.

Disabled adults who have called the apartment building home for independent living say the group helping them was never told by the complex that there was an order to vacate the building.

“I know the first floor is cold it feels like outisde,” said resident Amber McDuffy.

McDuffy said she was as shocked as Local 4 was to find the notice plastered on the door.

One big and freezing issue was the lack of heat all week and the confusion about what residents should do.

“The city of Troy said it was a ‘Stay at your own risk,’” McDuffy said. “If that was the case, then why didn’t they post that as well as all of the other things.”

The Troy city manager confirmed that a crew was on site fixing the heating system, but there was no heat all week.

Troy Place is also home to On My Own Michigan clients to help people with disabilities have independent living.

Apartment management never alerted On My Own to come to move their clients out.

“When we went back to the apartments, it was surrounded by police, and then we started moving our students out,” said a member of On My Own.

Still, some were fed up when they were told earlier they couldn’t stay there.

“With the inspector coming through yesterday, saying everybody has to leave, they gave us a list of hotels like Red Roof Inn, saying it’s cheaper,” said a resident. “Nobody should have to leave their apartment on their own dime because it’s uninhabitable.”

Troy city management said they’ve launched an operation with Oakland County to help people vacating their apartments.
