DETROIT – A Metro Detroit native turned Buccaneers player will be facing off against the Lions Sunday.
Kaevon Merriweather graduated from Belleville High School and is now playing his rookie year as a safety for Tampa Bay.
Merriweather’s family still lives in Bellville and will be at Ford Field Sunday routing for the visiting team.
“We’re still Lions fans but we’re more Tampa Bay fans now of course because my son plays for them,” said Merriweather’s mom, Latanya Franklin.
She said some of her friends and coworkers are a little more torn ahead of the game.
“One of my coworkers sent me a picture, he has his Detroit Lions coat but he has a Tampa Bay hat. So it’ll be a lot of that going on too, like people trying to support both,” Franklin said.
She said her son is excited to play at Ford Field.
“I call it his home field, even though it’s not his home field. Tampa Bay of course is, but this still will always be home,” Franklin said. “He was excited to be able to come and play in front of his old teammates and his friends and his family.”
