Michigan Democrats plan to make abortion part of their 2024 election playbook

Abortion rights opponents believe Democrats are overplaying their hand, misleading voters

Beyond the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, Michigan Democrats plan to make abortion part of their 2024 election playbook.

“People are fired up about protecting our freedoms across the country,” said Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer at an event in Detroit.

She also expressed concern about a national abortion ban if Republicans take the White House.

Will Jones: “How much is a ban realistic?”

“You know what, three years ago, no one would have ever thought Roe v. Wade would be overturned,” said Whitmer. “So, I am not going to play the hypothetical game and say oh is it or is it or isn’t realistic. It is possible. And if it is possible, we can rest in our laurels.”

Will Jones: “This is good politics for Democrats. Is that another reason?”

“It is not about politics. It is about fundamental rights,” Whitmer said.

Abortion rights opponents believe the Democrats are overplaying their hand on abortion and misleading voters.

“They are hoping abortion is their ticket to victories in November, and I just don’t think they are going to see that,” said Right to Life of Michigan Executive Director Amber Roseboom. “They have gotten out of step where voters are, and I think you are going to see that throughout the election cycle and in November.”

Roseboom said the Democrats are using abortion as a distraction.

“The top issue on voters’ minds is what you might expect, inflation,” Roseboom said. “We all go to the grocery store and what might have cost $90 now cost $200.”
