Police arrest men involved in Pontiac shooting that killed 1, critically injured another

Both men are being held in Oakland County jail

The Oakland County Sheriff’s detectives from the Pontiac Division have arrested two men who were involved in the Jan. 14 shooting, which claimed the life of 27-year-old J’Son Markell Hunt and left another man in critical condition.

The arrest occurred on Friday (Jan. 26), and officials say the evidence they obtained at the scene, along with eyewitness statements, they were able to positively identify 26-year-old Jermaine Lee Jackson of Pontiac as the prime suspect in the homicide.

Detectives said they were able to identify 25-year-old Ja-Vontay Darnell Boykin of Pontiac as an accessory to the crime.

Jackson was taken into custody in Detroit on Jan. 25 without incident as he was reporting for a mandatory probation meeting for a previous felony conviction out of the United States District Court of Eastern Michigan.

Boykin, who was his accomplice, was taken into custody without incident on Jan. 20 in Pontiac.

Jackson was charged on Friday in 50th District Court on the following felony charge issued by the Oakland County Prosecutors Office:

  • Homicide-- Open murder
  • Possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony
  • Assault with intent to murder
  • Possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony
  • Weapon-- firearms-- possession by a felon
  • Possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony
  • Weapons- carrying concealed

Jackson was denied bond in the case and is scheduled for a probable cause conference on Feb. 6.

Boykin was charged on Jan. 25 in the 50th District Court on the following charges:

  • Accessory after the fact (Felony)
  • Accessory after the fact (Felony)
  • Lying to a police officer-- violent crime investigation

A bond of $250,000 cash/surety 10% was set for Boykin.

A probable cause conference is also scheduled on Feb. 6.

“I am proud of the work by our team to take these two off the street,” said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard. “They must be held accountable for this senseless shooting and violent homicide.”
