Man charged in drunk driving crash that killed Chesterfield Township mother

CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A Lenox Township man is facing multiple felonies in connection with a Friday, Jan. 26, drunk driving crash that killed a mother.

The crash happened at about 9 p.m. on Gratiot Avenue, near 25 Mile Road. Police said the responding officers found a “massive crash scene” spread over a large area of the road.

Background: Chesterfield Township crash kills 1, police seek other driver that fled on foot

According to authorities, a speeding Ford F-250 crashed into a Kia. The driver of the Kia, a 39-year-old woman from Chesterfield Township, died at the scene. Police said the driver of the Ford was seen by witnesses running from the scene on foot.

Police arrested Matthew James Reynolds, 39, later that night. He was charged Tuesday, Jan. 30, with failure to stop at the scene of an accident when at fault resulting in death, lying to a peace officer during a violent crime investigation and operating a vehicle without an ignition interlock device.

Bond was set at $300,000 cash/surety, no 10%. If released, he will be required to have a sober link and alcohol testing.

He is expected to return to court for a probable cause hearing Feb. 7.
