Michigan’s last horse racing track closes after 80-year run

Northville Downs owners search for new home

NORTHVILLE, Mich. – The last horse racing track in Michigan closed after an 80-year run.

The final bets were placed at Northville Downs Saturday, marking the end of an era for the track that opened in 1944.

Hundreds of people came out for the final night, paying tribute to 80 years of horse racing.

For many, the closing is emotional.

“We’ve been coming here every weekend it’s open usually Friday and Saturday nights to race our horses, help other people,” Tammy Headworth said.

Looking back on all the memories, she said it’s hard not to cry.

“It’s like a family here, we’re like a family,” said Headworth.

The track sold to a housing developer in 2018, but Saturday marked the official end.

Regulars were overwhelmed by the turnout, the giant crowd giving flashbacks to what it was like back in the day.

“We don’t usually have this many people,” said Gabrielle O’hear. “It’d be really cool if all these people were here prior to the end.”

The owner said they’re actively searching for a new home.
