DETROIT – Local 4 News is getting out of the studio and hitting the road to be In Your Neighborhood! We’re showcasing what makes our communities great!
If you take a trip to Detroit’s northwest side, you’ll find an area that’s filled with life and energy. It’s a community where block clubs are strong with murals that make the neighborhood bright and inviting.
48238 is roughly 5 square miles between Meyers Road, the Lodge Freeway, Puritan and Fullerton avenues. It features Detroit’s Pilgrim Village, Chalfonte, Davison-Schoolcraft, Russell Woods, Dexter-Fenkell and Northwest Community neighborhoods.
The area is filled with people who care about each other and are invested in keeping the community safe.
”Everybody is neighborly,” said Tenisha Edwards.
“I have a community organization for community planning association,” said Tony Clark. ”We’re knocking out crime through skilled trades.”
The City of Detroit is opening new parks in the area and community members say the new development is encouraging.
“We see businesses coming back. We see families coming back. It makes a difference,” said Andrew Harris. “This area is definitely on the comeback.”
You’ll find Loyola High School, a private Catholic school for boys that has been around for three decades. It’s currently preparing to celebrate 14 consecutive years of 100% senior-class college acceptance.
“Loyola changes lives,” said interim principal Michael Black.

Among the other gems that make the neighborhood a hot spot is the Adams Butzel Complex, a rec center that features many activities, including swimming, dance classes, aerobics, billiards and more.
“I’m an archery instructor,” said Tenisha Edwards. “I do a fit class.”
The center features Detroit’s only indoor ice arena. Hockey and figure skating are popular.
That’s not all. In addition to its historic churches and the Parkman Detroit Public Library, 48238 includes many cultural and community staples.
