ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Mich. – A second man has been charged with murder in a cold case dating back to 1980.
Anthony Harris, 63, of Port Huron has been arrested and charged with open murder in the November 1980 murder of Karen Umphrey. Harris was arrested without incident on Tuesday, Feb. 6.
Douglas Laming is also facing murder charges in connection with Umphrey’s death. Laming was arrested in December and is being held at the St. Clair County Jail. His next court date is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Feb. 20.
Umphrey was 21 years old when she was found dead in the State Game Area in Beards Hill on the morning of Nov. 2, 1980. The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office said advancements in DNA testing helped them identify the first suspect.
“St. Clair County Sheriff detectives, along with St. Clair County Prosecutor’s Office, have done an extensive amount of investigating, research, and interviewing to make these arrests,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release.
