WARREN, Mich. – Clean-up is underway at Bear Creek in Warren after an unknown substance spilled into the water.
The incident was discovered Wednesday (Feb. 7), and although test results are pending, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) believes it came from a now-defunct industrial business.
Warren Mayor Lori M. Stone talked about the clean-up efforts, but Local 4 was told that the drinking water is not impacted, meaning residents can continue drinking it as they usually would.
However, residents are being asked to stay away from the river until officials have completed testing.
So far, standard testing of samples has been taken for things known to be found in the creek, but none of them came back positive.
The Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy is still investigating the situation.
Officials say samples have been sent to the lab, and they’re expecting results on Friday, Feb. 9.
This is a breaking news story, and updates will be posted as they become available.
