Blog: This Super Bowl has me super bummed

Chiefs and 49ers face off in Las Vegas

As some of you know, I have been a Detroit Lions fan for just over a month now and I cannot even begin to find the words to express my utter despair when they lost to the 49ers.

Okay, yeah, yeah, I know. A month isn’t a very long time. But, listen, it’s not like I was rooting for a different team. I was just, not watching football at all. I kind of get the hype now.

I really, really wanted to see them win. I can’t imagine how devastated true fans must feel (Ken knows though). Never making it to the Super Bowl must sting, but they were so close this time. They were so close! So close! There’s always next time, right? I know I’ll be watching.

What I won’t be watching is the Super Bowl today. What will I be watching? Easy. I’ll be watching season four of the hit reality TV show Survivor (season four aired in 2002). Just so you know, there are 45 seasons of Survivor and season 46 airs this month. I could try to justify myself to you, but you either get it or you don’t.

What was the point of this rant again? Detroit Lions? Survivor? Oh, yeah, the Super Bowl. First of all, are you going to watch? We’ve already established what I’ll be watching (in case you already forgot, I’ll be watching episodes of a reality TV show that aired 22 years ago).

Earlier this week we put out a poll asking how Lions fans were feeling about the Super Bowl. Here are the results:

  • 48% said they are planning on watching the Super Bowl.
  • 59% said the Lions loss changed their Super Bowl plans.
  • 58% said the think it’ll be tough to watch the Super Bowl this year.
  • 82% said they are not planning on attending or hosting a Super Bowl party.

I am among the 82%.

But, if you are hosting or attending a Super Bowl party you’ll probably want to know how to defend yourself against food poisoning. I know, food poisoning, everyone likes to read and learn about it. Truly exciting stuff. I’m being sarcastic, in case that wasn’t clear.

Jonel Aleccia with the Associated Press has an article that goes over what you need to know. Here are the basics:

  • Check for recalls. Specifically, check for any bean dips, enchiladas, soft cheeses, sour cream and taco kits produced by Rizo Lopez Foods. A full list is available on the FDA’s website.
  • Don’t leave perishable foods out. That means your chicken wings, deli wraps, meatballs and even the fresh vegetables and fruit should not be left out for more than two hours.
  • Stay clean. Wash your hands for 20 seconds before and after handling raw meat. Be aware of cross contamination and clean all utensils and surfaces.
