DETROIT – Demolition has started for an iconic former YMCA building in Detroit that has been closed for more than two decades.
The former Hannan Memorial YMCA building, at 10401 E. Jefferson Avenue, will be demolished due to the severe dilapidation of the building, with much of the roof compromised, falling brick, and loose debris posing safety hazards to the community, according to the city.
The YMCA building was an integral part of the community after opening its doors in 1928. The city says that while acknowledging the sentimental value the structure holds for many Detroiters, the initiative aims to pave the way for a safer environment for residents.
“The Hannan Memorial YMCA has been a part of Detroit’s history for nearly a century, and we understand the emotional connection that residents have with this landmark,” said LaJuan Counts, director of the Detroit Construction & Demolition Department. “However, the current state of the building demands decisive action to ensure the safety of our community.”
The vacant land that will result from the demolition presents an opportunity for innovative structures that contribute to the city’s growth and prosperity.
The demolition of the former Hannan Memorial YMCA will begin Monday, Feb. 12, and will take several weeks to complete.
