SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – A 15-year-old boy from Ferndale was critically injured after being shot at a Southfield hotel.
According to authorities, emergency crews were sent to the Westin Hotel, just north of 10 Mile Road, at about 8:45 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 11. Police said they found a boy who was suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head. Medical aid was given at the scene and the victim was rushed to a hospital, where he is listed in grave condition. Police said he is not expected to survive.
He was only identified as a 10th-grade student of Loyola High School, which will have grief counselors on hand for staff and students.
Police said the victim was with two other juveniles in the hotel room unsupervised when the shooting happened. Two guns were reportedly recovered from the waistband of one a 15-year-old from Detroit, who was taken into custody. Police said one gun was a Glock with an extended magazine and laser sight that was stolen out of Flint in June 2022 and the other was a Glock with an extended magazine with no record of ownership. The teen is expected to be charged with two counts of carrying a concealed weapon. Further charges may be announced.
Police believe one of the Glock handguns recovered was used in the shooting. Drug paraphernalia were reportedly recovered from the hotel room.
Southfield Chief of Police Elvin V. Barren called the incident tragic and “totally preventable.”
The third juvenile was only identified as a resident of Southfield.
Police are investigating who set up the hotel room for the teens. The adult may also face charges.
