SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Police have confirmed the 15-year-old boy who was shot in the head at the Westin Hotel in Southfield has died from his injuries.
Tyler, a Loyola High School student, was at a sleepover at the hotel when he was shot Sunday, Feb. 11. He was treated at the scene and was taken to a hospital in “grave condition.” At the time, police said he was not likely to survive.
Southfield Chief of Police Elvin V. Barren confirmed Thursday, Feb. 15, that Tyler died shortly after midnight.
An adult rented the room for the teens but left them unsupervised. Police are working to get in contact with that person and the teen who allegedly fired the gun.
Two guns were reportedly recovered from the waistband of a 15-year-old from Detroit, who was taken into custody. Police said one gun was a Glock with an extended magazine and laser sight that was stolen out of Flint in June 2022 and the other was a Glock with an extended magazine with no record of ownership. The teen was charged with two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, but not shooting Tyler. That teen reportedly left before emergency crews arrived.
Police believe one of the Glock handguns recovered was used in the shooting.
Barren said the department is doing everything possible to figure out exactly what happened. He said they are working to contact the adult who rented the room, who may face charges.
“Whoever didn’t secure those weapons and whoever rented the room, now there’s a huge huge chance that they can be liable because of the mere fact that the precedence has been set by the Jenifer Crumbley trial,” said Crime and Safety expert Darnell Blackburn.
Loyola High School officials said grief counselors would be available for students and staff.
