Hundreds of thousands of people are set to attend. Following the shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl celebration, Detroit Police Chief James White held a briefing to discuss security for the upcoming draft.
“Our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the family and loved ones of Kansas City,” White said. “Tragic event. Just way too many guns in the wrong hands of people in our country.”
White was quick to point out the parade was a local event that was not connected directly to the NFL.
White said Detroit has been planning for the draft for two years and solid plans are in place that won’t make many changes to Detroit’s security operations. He added there are state, local and federal agencies working together to make sure things run smoothly.
“We have been in full preparation mode for months and are confident in our safety plan. The City of Detroit has hosted several large-scale successful events recently including the Ford Fireworks, the Detroit Grand Prix, America’s Thanksgiving Parade, and Lions games with more than 70,000 fans in attendance as well as many other events and concerts,” White said. “Taking from those experiences, we have built our safety strategy and are confident this plan will ensure the safety of all in attendance at the draft and the surrounding areas.”
