Police introduce new ‘Bola Wrap’ device to help de-escalate situations across Metro Detroit

New tech is something you’d see in a superhero’s utility belt

DETROIT – The Detroit Police Department is expanding its crisis intervention techniques by exploring new technology, allowing officers to arrest a suspect rather than taking them out.

The new technology, called “Bola Wrap,” is used to de-escalate situations across Metro Detroit.

“In less than lethal situations, it’s a great non-lethal option,” said Local 4 Crime and Safety Expert Darnell Blackburn. “If you have a person who may be mentally incapacitated or a person who is dealing with a mental crisis, then it’s a great opportunity.”

The Detroit Police Department is the latest to start using the new technology.

However, there will still be a need for firearms in certain situations.

“However, you still have to have the taser, you have to have the firearm just in case things escalate,” Blackburn said. “So it’s a great opportunity to minimize and mitigate the risk associated with injuries from civilians as well as police personnel.”

Many people hope this will make a difference, as the new tech is something you’d see in a superhero’s utility belt.
