DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. – Officials from the Dearborn Heights Police Department joined Michigan State Police officials in investigating the overnight death of a prisoner in a DHPD jail cell.
The incident occurred on Thursday (Feb. 15) at 8 p.m. when a 63-year-old Inkster resident was being held on a felony operating while intoxicated (OWI) charge.
Officials say the man was found unresponsive by DHPD officers during a routine cell check.
Officers said they provided emergency assistance until firefighters arrived and transported the man to a Metro Detroit hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The cause of his death is unknown.
“This is truly an unfortunate situation,” said Dearborn Heights Mayor Bill Bazzi. “We look forward to learning the results of the ongoing investigations by both the DHPD and the MSP, which will be released to the public as soon as they are completed. In the meantime, we offer our sincere condolences to the family of this gentleman”.
