Semi truck fire closes multiple lanes of westbound I-696

MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. – Multiple lanes of westbound I-696 were closed down Wednesday, Feb. 21, after the contents of a semi truck caught fire.

It happened at about 9:45 a.m. at the border of Madison Heights and Warren. Initially, the westbound entrance ramp from Dequindre Road and all lanes except the left lane were closed, but the entrance ramp reopened shortly after noon.

The contents of the truck were emptied on the shoulder of the freeway so crews could more effectively battle the fire.

No injuries were reported.
