An off-duty police officer, who told authorities they were with Detroit police, was arrested following a drunk driving crash in Clinton Township.
The crash occurred on Sunday, Feb. 18. Investigators learned that the off-duty cop was so under the influence that they were arrested.
The Clinton Township Police Department said the intoxicated officer told police they were employed by the Detroit Police Department. DPD officials confirmed that information the following Wednesday.
DPD said Wednesday afternoon that the incident had been turned over to Internal Affairs for investigation. Officials also said the officer was moved to administrative duty in the meantime.
The officer’s identity has not been released.
“The Detroit Police Department can confirm that a Detroit Police officer was arrested following an off-duty drunk driving incident that occurred on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024, in Clinton Township.
“These alleged actions are disappointing. There is a high standard of conduct that all Detroit Police Officers have sworn to uphold. Under no circumstances will the DPD condone acts of drunk driving by any of its members.
“Pursuant to DPD policy, this matter has been turned over to Internal Affairs for investigation. The member has been placed in an administrative duty (no gun) status pending further action by Internal Affairs.”
