Hear from Michigan waitress who was fired after getting $10,000 tip

Customer left $10,000 tip at Mason Jar Cafe in Benton Harbor

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. – Local 4 spoke with a Michigan waitress who was fired after receiving a $10,000 tip on a bill for $32.

Linsey Boyd said the customer requested that the tip be shared with everybody working at the Mason Jar Cafe in Benton Harbor that day.

A week later, Boyd was fired for drama over how the tip was being divvied up, she said.

Boyd said some of her coworkers didn’t think it was fair, and she told her bosses about the grumbling.

“I at least made them aware of the things that were being said,” Boyd said.

She was fired shortly afterward. The restaurant won’t reveal why, only claiming that the firing wasn’t about the tip.

Boyd posted on social media about how upset she was over being fired. She said she then started getting threats from her former employer.

“I was told legal action was being taken against me, and that if I (didn’t want) lawyers to be after me for the foreseeable future, I needed to take my post down,” Boyd said.

Boyd recorded those alleged threatening calls and instead got a lawyer of her own.

So far, no litigation has been filed. Boyd said she’s now without a job for the first time since she was 15 years old.
