DETROIT – Four people have been charged after at least 23 shots were fired into a Detroit home, killing an 11-year-old girl who was asleep on the couch.
Shooting details
The shooting happened at 4:12 a.m. Feb. 20, 2024, at a home in the 6000 block of Pennsylvania Street on Detroit’s east side.
Officers said Lamara Glenn, 11, was sleeping on a couch inside the home, and there were at least eight other people inside -- ages 7, 8, 11, 12, 16, 18, 38, and 43.
Detroit police said a group of shooters approached the house and fired at least 23 shots. Four people were arrested, and a gun was recovered. Police later took a fifth person into custody.
A shooting happened at the same house in December, according to officials.
Lamara was struck in the head by gunfire. She was taken by officers to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but Wayne County prosecutors revealed on Monday, Feb. 26, that she died from her injuries.
4 people charged
Officials believe 19-year-old Hershel Lanier Marion Jr., 18-year-old Tahkari Turner, and 19-year-old Nasir Lavant Garrett, all of Detroit, fired handguns into the house before running away.
Turner and Garrett were arrested later in the day after Detroit police investigated the shooting.
Robert Lee Turner Jr., 20, was arrested the following day.
Tahkari Turner, Garrett, and Robert Turner were charged Friday, Feb. 23, and Marion was charged Monday, Feb. 26.
Current charges
All four men have been charged in the shooting, but those charges will be amended now that the 11-year-old girl has died, according to prosecutors.
Tahkari Turner, Garrett, and Marion are currently each charged with nine counts of assault with intent to murder, one count of discharge in or at a building causing serious impairment, and 10 felony firearm violations.
Robert Turner is currently charged with felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, accessory after the fact, tampering with evidence, and two felony firearm violations.
“These senseless shootings are even more tragic when innocent people, especially a child, is harmed,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said. “The evidence will show that the defendants are responsible for this brutal and violent assault. This case is still under investigation, and we expect another potential defendant will be charged.”
