Woman hospitalized after colliding with EMS on Detroit’s west side

Woman is in temp serious condition

DETROIT – On the city’s west side, a woman was rushed to the hospital after her car and a Detroit ambulance collided as EMS was in the middle of a run.

The incident occurred Tuesday (Feb. 27) morning at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Lonyo Street just off of I-94.

When a priority one run is in motion, someone is not breathing.

“Patient with injury. At the light, and we t-boned them, we are going to need an engine, the vehicle was stopped,” said EMS Radio.

You can hear the EMS medic say they t-boned a driver at the intersection in southwest Detroit.

The medic crew was responding to the highest priority run a “Code 1,” meaning a person found unconscious.

That means EMS uses lights and sirens as they drive, but the ambulance and this car collide.

Airbags went off in the ambulance, and the car, the woman driving the car was trapped.

“Be advised, I have one patient who is injured and trapped,” EMS Radio said. “We will need one additional ambulance. We are working on extricating right now.”

The impact sent her car into a pickup truck. Efrain Munoz was inside that pickup.

“The ambulance had its lights on and was blowing its horn before it hit the car, making the car hit me on the side of my truck,” said Munoz.

Officials say another EMS rig got to the priority one and took that person to the hospital. They say the person is doing fine.

The woman involved in the crash is in temporary serious condition. The two medics were checked out, and Local 4 was told that they were doing OK.
