DETROIT – Three kids who were injured in a Tuesday afternoon home explosion on Detroit’s east side have been released and are recovering.
They were in the front room of the home next door when the explosion happened.
They’re doing OK right now, but so many factors could’ve led to this really being a different story.
“I’m still trying to gather my thoughts and figure everything out,” said Jonelle Chavious. “I’m just happy to have my kids alive. That’s it.”
Chavious and her family of five are now displaced with nowhere to go.
“This house, the material things are replaceable, but their lives are not,” Chavious said.
All her kids, ages 12, 11, and six, were inside when the house next door exploded out of nowhere Tuesday (Feb. 27) afternoon while the siblings were playing video games in the living room.
“That brick wall right there fell when the explosion hit on Jacob, and the glass flew,” Chavious said. “He didn’t have a shirt on, so he got cut up all on his back. And his head and his head. And then my daughter, she was sitting on the couch watching the boys play the video game, and she just heard the boom and had glass on her arms and cut.”
Now, all three have lacerations all over their body.
“They actually got released from the hospital late last night,” Chavious said. “They are at a relative’s house sleeping. I checked on them. They’re just nervous, still jumpy and sore. Little scared still about everything.”
Thankfully, all children have been released from the hospital. However, recovery is now going to be a long road. The family lost everything. Chavious is choosing to look at the silver lining rather than the dark clouds.
“I’m just happy that I can still love on them, kiss on and love on my babies because, at the end of the day, you never know what might happen,” Chavious said.
