STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – A mother and her adult daughter were shot during a road rage incident in Sterling Heights, according to police.
Lt. Mario Bastianelli of the Sterling Heights Police Department said the incident occurred around 5 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 27) on Schoenherr Road near Hall Road.
Bastianelli said the road rage situation was between two vehicles, a white Durango and a red Jeep.
A mother and her adult daughter were in the Jeep.
A female with a concealed weapons permit was driving the Durango.
Police said the two cars were involved in a road rage situation when the driver of the Durango turned into a parking lot of a shopping area, and the Jeep followed.
A confrontation ensued, and shots were fired.
“The one vehicle that had the one female driver, she had a valid CPL, ultimately she opened fire on the mom and daughter, and they were both struck,” said Bastianelli.
The mom has non-life-threatening injuries. The daughter is in critical condition.
Police said the driver who fired the shots stayed on the scene for investigators to arrive, and she has been cooperating with the investigation.
After being taken in to be interviewed, the driver who fired the shots was released from custody.
Police say the investigation is ongoing, and it is unclear what, if any, charges will be brought against the driver.
Bastianelli said when it comes to road rage, it’s not just worth it.
“Any driving offense where you’re going to get into an argument with somebody, you don’t know what that person has been going through, what’s going on, you don’t know if they’re armed,” Bastianelli said. “And nothing is worth risking your life over or risking going to jail over.”
