WARREN, Mich. – Mound Road closed briefly Thursday morning as police were called to investigate a “large” amount of money found in a Warren apartment after it caught fire. But it turns out the money wasn’t as concerning as originally thought.

An apartment off Mound Road between 14 Mile and Chicago roads caught fire on the morning of Thursday, Feb. 29. Only one apartment in the multi-unit building was affected by the blaze, and no one was hurt, officials said.

The renter wasn’t home at the time of the fire, according to authorities. Firefighters did, however, find what they called a “large” amount of cash in the apartment.

Police were called to investigate the finding. Authorities briefly closed Mound Road in the area during their investigation.

The investigation revealed that the “large” amount of money found in the apartment was actually “motion picture money,” officials said -- meaning it’s prop money made to look real for filming movies and the like. Mound Road has since reopened to traffic.

The cause of the fire was unknown and still under investigation as of late Thursday morning.

The blaze did not appear to be huge, but did cause some damage. At least one of the apartment’s windows was blown out, and left debris along the side of the building. The full extent of the damage was not immediately clear.
