DETROIT – A husband and wife have been charged after three dogs escaped their home through a gate and killed a man who was walking by in Detroit, officials said.
Detroit police were called around 9:20 p.m. Jan. 29, 2024, to a home in the area of West Chicago and Longacre Street on the city’s west side.
Officials said Harold Phillips, 35, of Detroit, was walking in the area when three dogs escaped from the home of Roy Eric Goodman, 40, and Trevina Quiche Goodman, 38.
The dogs got out through an unsecured front gate and attacked Phillips, prosecutors said. Medical officials took him to a nearby hospital, but he died from his injuries on Feb. 2.
The Goodmans are both charged with one count of dangerous animal causing death.
“This is heartbreaking,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said. “I just do not understand why we continue to see unleashed and unsecured dangerous dogs running loose and killing our citizenry. With pet ownership comes responsibility, pure and simple. I do not see what is hard to understand about that.”
The Goodmans were arraigned separately at 36th District Court and each given a $25,000 cash bond. If they’re released, they can’t own animals or have contact with Phillips’ family.
Roy Goodman’s bond redetermination hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday. Trevina Goodman’s bond redetermination hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. March 4.
A probable cause conference for the couple is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. March 6, and their preliminary examination is scheduled for 8:45 a.m. March 13.
