3 charged in suspected Macomb County auto theft ring

Authorities believe more people could be involved

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – Three 23-year-old men from Detroit have been arrested and charged after reportedly attempting to steal a GMC Tahoe from a Washington Township dealership.

According to authorities, the investigation began after a key was stolen from the Heidebreicht Chevrolet dealership on Jan. 12. Surveillance camera footage from Thursday, Feb. 29, reportedly captured a gray Blazer enter the dealership and drive around until a 2024 GMC Tahoe’s lights flashed, at which point the Blazer left the dealership. Authorities believe the occupants were trying to discover which vehicle the stolen key went to.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said the Blazer dropped off a man wearing a ski mask and dressed in black, who walked back to the dealership and attempted to start the Tahoe, but was taken into custody. He was identified as Damar Walston.

The Blazer sped off and eventually pulled over with a flat tire near 24 Mile Road after deputies deployed stop sticks. The sheriff’s office said two men ran into nearby brush, where one man -- identified as Dwayne Williams Jr. -- was taken into custody.

With the help of the Shelby Township Police Department and a Michigan State Police helicopter, the third suspect -- identified as Deon Brooks -- was found and arrested.

Walston was charged Friday with motor vehicle -- unlawful driving away and conspiracy to commit motor vehicle -- unlawful driving away.

Williams and Brooks were both charged with motor vehicle -- unlawful driving away, conspiracy to commit motor vehicle -- unlawful driving away and assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer. Brooks had an additional charge of fleeing fourth degree.

Bond for all three men was set at $25,000 10% cash/surety. Williams and Brooks posted bond and are no longer in custody, but Walston remains lodged at the Macomb County Jail.

Authorities believe more people could be involved and are working to identify additional suspects.
