Here’s how warmer-than-usual winter is impacting businesses across Metro Detroit

The roar of a weedwhacker is not the typical sound of early March in Michigan.

But instead of salting or plowing, GoodFellows Lawn and Landscape workers were doing yard work at a home in Clarkston Monday (March 4) afternoon, weeks ahead of schedule.

“We are out here enjoying the great weather and doing a spring cleanup, picking up leaves and hedge trimming,” said owner Eric Fellows.

The warmer-than-usual winter has impacted his business.

“It is definitely harder on my guys because they rely on coming in and making the hours,” Fellows said.

Most snowplow companies usually operate with a combination of contracts and pay-per-service.

The contracts allow them to stay afloat during winters like this.

“Per job usually helps to get some more income in and definitely get the guys to come in and make the hours,” Fellows said.

Despite what the weather feels like now, Fellows isn’t planning to put away his winter gear just yet.

“I am sure Mother Nature has something in store for us still, winter might not be over yet,” Fellows said.
