WARREN, Mich. – William Dwyer was removed from his post as Warren Police Commissioner on Tuesday after serving his second stint in the role that started in 2017.
Dwyer has been a longtime fixture in the Macomb and Oakland county communities, serving as Warren Police Commissioner from 2008 to 2010, and again from 2017 to 2024.

Prior to his assignment in Warren, Dwyer served 23 years with the Farmington Hills Police Department as Police Chief.
The change comes as Lori Stone takes over as mayor after Jim Fouts termed out after 16 years in the mayor’s office.
“I am very appreciative of Dwyer’s years of service in law enforcement and specifically his nearly 9 years of service as the Warren Police Commissioner,” Stone said in a statement released Tuesday. “I appreciate Dwyer’s assistance during my transition into office.”
Stone will have the opportunity to appoint a new police commissioner in the coming weeks. Warren Police Deputy Commissioner Charles Rushton will serve as the acting interim Police Commissioner as city officials search for a permanent replacement.
“I want the residents of Warren to know I am committed to ensuring the Warren Police Department provides the consistent, dependable, and community-based services our residents have come to expect. I have full faith in those providing leadership for the Warren Police Department moving forward,” Stone said. “I wish Commissioner Dwyer all the best and I am grateful for his years of service to the Warren community.”
