‘It’s a tragedy’ -- Youth advocate killed in Highland Park shooting

Investigation is ongoing

HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. – Michigan State Police and Highland Park police are investigating a shooting Thursday, March 7, that killed a 25-year-old man.

Police said the shooting happened at a home near the intersection of Grove Street and Third Avenue. Further details were not revealed at the time.

Neighbors said they were awoken at about 1 a.m. to more than a dozen gunshots. The victim was reportedly a popular youth sports sponsor.

One neighbor, who did not want to be identified, described the victim as a hard-working and kind man who did a lot to help the children in their community.

”It’s a tragedy for the simple fact that we lost a good person,” he said. ”He looked out for the football team, would make sure all kids had cleats, would make sure all kids’ tuition was paid if their parents couldn’t pay it, would make sure all the kids had pizza if he saw them in the yard playing football.”

Police continue to canvas the area and collect evidence in and around the house. Neighbors said the victim didn’t live in the home and that Grove Street is normally quiet.

“There’s no reason for this to ever happen,” one neighbor said. “We need to take more control of our neighborhoods and stop blaming it on other people. It’s us at this point.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Michigan State Police at 855-MICH-TIP. Tips can be made anonymously through Crime Stoppers online or at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
