DETROIT – The Detroit People Mover was temporarily closed to the public on Monday due to work being done on the guideway, officials said Sunday.
The elevated public transportation system that circles Downtown Detroit was not in service on Monday, March 11. Work was being done on the track “in advance of the NFL Draft,” the service said the Sunday prior.
That work was to include technology upgrades and “needed improvements to provide better experiences” for People Mover riders, officials said.
The People Mover was scheduled to reopen at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12.
Upgrades have been a major priority for the city and downtown businesses ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft, which is coming to Detroit at the end of April. Millions of dollars have been budgeted for projects focused on enhancing sidewalks, roadways, lighting and more.
The 89th annual draft is expected to bring hundreds of thousands of people to the city. Events will kick off at Campus Martius Park and Hart Plaza on Thursday, April 25 and last through Saturday, April 27.
