MSP, church partner in Southfield to ensure guns repurchased are destroyed, not recycled

More than 220 guns were collected in 2023

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – A Southfield church is applauding the Michigan State Police’s announcement that guns being repurchased by a program in Southfield will be destroyed and not recycled.

Now, St. David’s Episcopal Church, which bought back 224 guns in December 2023, will not be recycled but wholly destroyed.

“This is a big step in public safety for our state and corrects a procedure that was as misleading as it was dangerous: guns said to be destroyed should be completely destroyed,” said Fr. Chris Yaw, rector of St. David’s, a church that has collected hundreds of unwanted guns from the community in recent years. “We are simply responding to a huge demand of unwanted guns in Michigan, we believe the message of Jesus is to be a good neighbor.”

Gunbusters, a Missouri-based gun disposal and recycling company, received the guns for free; under the previous arrangement, it would destroy part of the gun but re-sell other parts on the internet.

“Kudos to State Police Director Col. Grady and the Michigan State Police for taking this step. As a community member who’s collected hundreds of unwanted guns from the public, the ability to completely destroy guns and not just recycle them, is great news for our us, our donors, and our state.” said Fr. Yaw.
