WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. – Wayne County Executive Warren Evans gave his 2024 State of the County Address Tuesday.
During the address, Evans said the county was just days away from getting the keys to the new criminal justice center (CJC).
“The CJC represents our commitment to prioritizing the safety, security, and well-being of our community,” Evans said.
Located near I-75 and East Warren Avenue, the CJC will house the jail, juvenile detention center, the 3rd Circuit Criminal Court, and the prosecutor and sheriff’s offices.
Evans talked about improvements to the current juvenile detention system during his remarks.
Last year, Evans declared a public health emergency at the juvenile detention center due to overcrowding and lack of staff.
Since then, he said they’ve added 100 employees and raised wages.
“We’ve improved everything from food quality to education to recreation at the facility,” Evans said. “I remain committed to addressing the challenges head-on, working collaboratively to ensure the safety and well-being of our youth and staff.”
Once the CJC is turned over to county officials, they will have six months to move in.
