Warren officer injured in crash while responding to fight

Driver suspected in police chase, fight was tased and arrested

WARREN, Mich. – An officer on the way to a scene where a man was fighting with police was injured in a crash in Warren.

Warren police officers in a marked patrol car pulled over a gold Chevy Malibu at 4:50 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2024, in the area of 8 Mile Road near Ryan Road. Officers asked the driver to get out of the car, but he was “uncooperative and began to fight” with them.

Police said the driver refused to get out of the car, and drove away, striking an officer and “possibly running over an officer’s foot.” Neither officer needed medical attention. Police chased the driver through several streets in Detroit before he pulled over in the area of 8 Mile Road near Russell Avenue and fought with officers.

Police officers tased the driver and placed him under arrest. He was taken to the Warren Police Department jail. Officers searched the area for a gun, which they believe he may have thrown out of the vehicle during the police chase.

An officer who was responding to the scene of the fight was injured in a crash at the intersection of 9 Mile road and Hoover Road. Police said that officer was driving south on Hoover Road with lights and sirens activated when a driver in a Nissan Altima collided with the officer’s patrol car.

The officer involved in the crash has a “possible concussion” and “likely a broken hand.” The officer was taken to a hospital and is listed in stable condition. The other driver was not injured, cooperated with police, and was released from the scene.
