Video shows brazen ‘Street Drifters’ taking over intersections in front of police in Detroit

Street Drifters are dangerous for spectators and annoying for neighbors

DETROIT – A new video shows reckless drivers pulling donuts and burnouts right in front of police on Detroit’s west side.

It’s a problem that always gets worse when the weather warms up, with so-called “Street Drifters” staging reckless stunts at intersections.

It’s dangerous for spectators and annoying for neighbors just trying to sleep.

With the warmer weather comes a lot of drivers revving their engines, getting ready to take over the intersections to do donuts. If you don’t think it’s part of a bigger problem, you’re not seeing the bigger picture here.

“It’ll be two or three in the morning, waking people up, burning rubber,” said Detroit resident Marvin.

Marvin is frustrated with street drifters doing donuts at the intersection near his home at Oakman Boulevard and Livernois.

“It’s real bad as they’ll be standing in the middle of the way and be doing those donuts,” Marvin said. “They block off the streets.”

And he’s not the only one after a video obtained by Metro Detroit News went viral showing multiple cars shutting down the intersection just five miles away near 7 Mile and Greenfield roads, all in front of the police.

“This is a nuisance for everyday working people who go out here in the city of Detroit that works hard,” said Detroit police Capt. Derrick Maye.

The Detroit Police Department once again spoke on the matter, saying it will happen, but it’s very dangerous.

Local 4 has done multiple stories about people being injured or even dying because of the stunts.

“It’s a danger to the community because of the of nature of the severity of the stunts and possibly losing control,” Maye said.

The DPD’s drifting and drag racing task force is still in place, and it plans to crack down even harder.

“We are out here, we are vigilant, and we are looking for drag racing, and we’re enforcing all criminal laws,” Maye said.

“I’m surprised that ain’t nobody got hurt yet,” Marvin said.

DPD said they are confiscating vehicles for way less. This incident however remains under investigation.
