Detroit to have new mass transit option for getting to Metro Airport

Cost of riding those coaches is aimed at being affordable for everyone

DETROIT – There’s a new option for folks to get to Romulus from downtown Detroit. It’s called the Detroit Air Express, and it’ll offer hourly trips from downtown to DTW.

The cost of riding those coaches is aimed at being affordable for everyone.

Air travel these days is a slog from front to back, and even getting to the airport on time is a significant worry.

There isn’t a mass transit answer to how to get to Metro Detroit without a car, but that’s about to change on Monday (March 25).

It’s been a long-term Detroit discussion. Using federal funding and some local dollars, the Michigan Flyer Detroit Air Express will start an 18-month trial that’s expected to run 365 days a year from 3 a.m. to 11 p.m. with 16 daily round trips.

It will depart from the intersection of Washington Boulevard and State Street in Detroit and make two stops with the Evans and McNamara terminals.

It’ll cost you $6 to buy your tickets online in advance or $8 at the door.

“It’s great to see these results finally showing up in our communities in a real way, improving connectivity and lowering costs for individuals and making our transportation system more effective, more interconnected, more efficient,” said Michigan Chief Infrastructure Officer Zachary Kolodin.

Thursday (March 21) at DTW was bedlam as thousands of people were looking to fly to warmer climates.

Vivian Johnson spent most of her life living in Detroit. She now calls Southfield home but beamed upon hearing about the shuttle.

“Say I don’t necessarily have someone to get me to the airport like a family member or a friend, and maybe they could somehow get me transport to here, and I have a way to get back, why not,” said Johnson.

Johnson said many in her circle of friends in the city also want to get to the airport and often can’t.

“There are a lot of people in the city of Detroit who don’t have vehicles, and so that would be another way for them to be able to expedite their travel; why not,” Johnson said.

Local 4 spoke with a lot of Detroiters at the airport on Wednesday, and they said they were too slammed timewise to get interviewed, but it’s getting a lot of thumbs up as a concept. Let’s see how it works out.
