Homemade fireworks believed to be cause of partial home explosion in Wyandotte

2 injured, 1 remains hospitalized

WYANDOTTE, Mich. – Police are investigating a home that partially exploded in Wyandotte. The noise was so loud that it left neighbors wondering what happened.

Police said the inside of the home suffered significant damage from the blast. One person was seriously injured.

The explosion happened at a home on Cora Street Sunday night.

“Most of the damage is done to the interior of the home. If you drove by it, it would like a couple of windows in the back would be the only thing you’d be able to tell, but most of the damaged occurred inside,” said Wyandotte Fire Chief Jeremy Moline.

Police said it was the result of someone trying to create homemade fireworks, but Moline said he could not confirm or deny that allegation, just that his team is investigating.

“We had the state Fire Marshals out there. The ATF had been out there. The fire department is investigating it,” Moline said. “Building and engineering has also been out there. So, we’re very confident that it’s safe and that no one is in any danger at this point.”

Another person was also able to make it out of the house and is expected to make a recovery. The other remains hospitalized.

Officials said it could be several days before the official cause is determined.
