ROYAL OAK, Mich. – A man is facing assault charges after allegedly attacking someone in his Royal Oak home and barricading there from police for several hours Monday night.

After a three-hour standoff with Royal Oak police, a 46-year-old man was arrested late Monday, March 25 at his home on Whitcomb Avenue near North Campbell Road. Police say the man barricaded himself inside at around 4:55 p.m., when officers were called to the house for a domestic assault.

The man -- who was reportedly showing signs of mental distress -- barricaded himself inside the home with his wife and two children. He was wearing a bulletproof vest and had “recently purchased long guns,” police reported early Tuesday. His behavior indicated that he was experiencing a “decline in his mental health,” according to police.

It was not said whether the man was armed with a gun during the standoff.

A heavy police presence surrounded the home Monday night, including a local SWAT team. Negotiators made “several attempts” to convince the man to come outside and surrender during that three-hour standoff, officials said.

The man was eventually apprehended by the SWAT team, and could be seen walking out of his home escorted by law enforcement. Police say the man was tased at some point and suffered minor injuries from it, though it wasn’t clear when exactly the tasing occurred.

The woman and children inside the home were not injured during the standoff, police said. It was not revealed who in the home reported the initial assault, or if anyone was injured then.

Residents in the area were told to stay in their homes during the standoff, which began around 7 p.m., according to police. The situation ended just after 10 p.m. It was unclear what happened between the times when officers were called to the home around 5 p.m., and when the standoff began at 7 p.m.

Investigators say they found and seized multiple weapons, ammunition, night vision goggles, and a tactical vest from inside the Royal Oak home.

The 46-year-old man -- whose identity had not yet been made public -- is reportedly facing charges for assault and domestic assault. His arraignment date was not immediately known.
