CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Authorities have located the body of a jet skier who went missing Thursday night while riding with a friend on Lake St. Clair.
A 19-year-old from New Baltimore was rescued from the water in the lake’s Anchor Bay the evening of Thursday, March 28. Chesterfield Township police say the teen went out on the water with a friend, 21-year-old Jonathan Kloss, who was found dead just after 12 p.m. on Friday.
Kloss and the teen reportedly took two jet skis onto the lake from a boat launch at Brandenburg Park in Chesterfield Township. The pair was expected to return by 7 p.m., but never showed, police said.
The Coast Guard told Local 4 that they received a call around 8:15 p.m. Thursday and began searching from a boat and a helicopter. At some point, the two jet skis were found “capsized and floating” in the lake’s Anchor Bay near Brandenburg Park.
The 19-year-old was found in the water and was rescued. The teen was initially unresponsive, according to the Coast Guard. He was taken to a local hospital. There was no update on his condition as of Friday morning.
Authorities were still searching for Kloss Friday morning, who police said was missing since 8:45 p.m. on Thursday. It was believed that Kloss was not wearing a life jacket.
Kloss was found dead in Anchor Bay just after 12 p.m. on Friday. This was near the rea where the jet ski capsized late Thursday night.
“The Kloss family is grieving the loss of Jonathan,” Chesterfield Township police said in a statement. “This incident is currently being investigated as an accident. There is no sign of criminal activity. The Chesterfield Twp Police Dept. would like to thank all the agencies and citizens that helped with this incident.”
Police have not yet provided any details about why the jet skis had capsized Thursday.
