The 29-year-old initially had a felony arrest warrant charged to him, but officials said on Monday, April 1, that the ex-Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back is being charged with misdemeanor battery.

If convicted, the five-year veteran could face a maximum of one year sentence.

Officials said they responded to a call about the domestic violence incident involving Sutton and a woman on Thursday, March 7, at 5 a.m., which Sutton allegedly fled, causing Florida officials to seek assistance.

The Lions released the following statement: “We became aware of the ongoing legal situation involving Cam Sutton this morning. We will continue to monitor the situation and will not have further comment at this time.”

The Lions released Sutton on Thursday, March 21, after Florida police said he was wanted for a domestic violence charge.

Lions President Rod Wood said Sutton was in the team’s building in Allen Park when police posted his warrant on Social media, causing the team to release him soon after.

Sutton, 29, signed a three-year, $33 million contract with the Lions in March 2023 and appeared in all of Detroit’s regular season and playoff games. Before that, the University of Tennessee product played for the Steelers from 2017 to 2022.
