Hazel Park pistol-whipper fell for man at gym, put trackers on his, girlfriend’s cars, cops say

52-year-old Rochester woman faces charges

Jie Yu (Hazel Park Police Department)

HAZEL PARK, Mich. – A woman who was tracked down in a pistol whipping case told police she fell for a man when she saw him at a gym and put trackers on both his and his girlfriend’s cars.

Officers said they were called at 8:19 a.m. Friday, March 29, 2024, to the 90 block of West Shevlin Avenue in Hazel Park for reports of someone being shot.

When they arrived, police said they learned that nobody had been shot, but a 35-year-old Hazel Park woman had been struck by a pistol while sitting in her car.

The woman told police that a DoorDash delivery person came up to her and asked about an address. She said the woman struck her with a pistol and then drove away in a gray 2018 Ford F-150 pickup truck.

Jie Yu, 52, of Rochester, was identified as the suspected attacker, so police went to her home. They said she arrived a short time later and admitted she had gone to Hazel Park because she “wanted to scare” the 35-year-old.

Officials said Yu’s story kept changing during their interviews, and what she said didn’t make sense. They searched her home and found packaging for a GPS tracking device.

Police spoke to the 35-year-old woman and found a tracking device on her car. They also checked her boyfriend’s car and found another tracking device.

The woman and her boyfriend said they have no connection to Yu.

Officers interviewed Yu again, and she admitted that she had “developed an infatuation” with the boyfriend from seeing him at a fitness gym.

She stalked the 35-year-old woman and her boyfriend for awhile before the pistol whipping, according to authorities.

Oakland County prosecutors charged Yu with:

  • Felonious assault -- a four-year felony.
  • Two counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony -- each two-year felonies.
  • Carrying a concealed weapon -- a five-year felony.
  • Aggravated stalking -- a five-year felony.
  • Motor vehicle tracking device violation -- a one-year misdemeanor.

Yu was arraigned Tuesday at 43rd District Court and given a $1 million bond, cash/surety.
