NOVI, Mich. – If you thought 2023 was bad for your commute, wait until you see what’s coming for I-96 near Novi and Wixom.
It’s going to be gridlock as crews work to rebuild bridges and the freeway.
The construction will put four lanes of traffic on one side of the road that was rebuilt in 2023.
“It’s horrible man, I work literally a half mile from here,” said Eric Krajacic, a frustrated driver. “I feel like they are getting ready to close it down for the second time and we’re going to have to go through this for the second year in a row.”
Starting Saturday, April 13, the ramps to westbound I-96 from northbound I-275 and westbound M-5 will be closed. Drivers will be detoured on Grand River Avenue.
The westbound traffic of I-96 will shift to eastbound lanes from I-275 to Kent Lake Road. There will be two lanes in each direction on the new road surface installed in summer 2023.
The northbound and southbound ramps from Novi Road to westbound I-96 will be closed and detoured on Grand River Avenue.
Crews are rebuilding ramps, repairing pavement, improving bridges and the Beck Road carpool lot.
Many of the changes and closures will last through fall 2024.
