According to authorities, the incident started at about 8 a.m. when a Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) team was following a black Jeep Patriot containing a suspected parole absconder on Lansing’s west side. Police said when the Jeep entered Delta Township, the suspect exited the passenger seat with a handgun and fired at the MDOC vehicle, whose agents returned fire.
Neither the suspect nor the MDOC agents were struck by gunfire.
The suspect returned to the vehicle, which MDOC followed to a shopping plaza at Waverly Road and Saginaw Highway, where the suspect ran on foot and the Jeep drove off.
Police have identified the suspect as Marcus Gamba Oglesby, a 31-year-old man from Jackson. He is described as standing 6 feet, 1 inch tall and weighing about 135 pounds. He was last seen wearing all black.
Photos of the Jeep Liberty provided by police show a Michigan license plate ERA 9231 and a bumper sticker on the rear hatch door that reads “Trust me, you don’t want to be this close.”
Police confirmed the Jeep was located behind a home in Lansing on Drexel Street. The home was searched by an MSP Emergency Support Team, but Oglesby was not located. The investigation is ongoing.
Michigan State Police consider Oglesby armed and dangerous and urge residents to not approach him, but to call 911 if seen.
