OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – A bustling weekend along Woodward Avenue took a perilous turn when a 17-year-old driver, heedless of the potential harm, evaded police, initiating a high-speed chase in Oakland County.
The driver of a modified Chrysler 300 recklessly fishtailed, accelerating and revving the engine out of control at Woodward Corners by Beaumont on Woodward Avenue and 13 Mile Road.
Ripping right in front of a Royal Oak police officer, the moment he tried to make a traffic stop, the driver did not stop, speeding away on a busy Woodward Avenue.
Officials say the driver hit turn after turn going south on Woodward Avenue, and another went through neighborhoods.
“This is what our officers are out there looking for,” said Royal Oak police Lieutenant Rich Millard. “They’re out there looking for reckless driving, careless driving, speeding drivers, and all of these drivers we’ve been looking for with this dangerous driving, we take strict enforcement.”
Royal Oak police cruiser camera was able to capture the whole incident.
“Well, his tires were flat when we were going through the neighborhood to slow him down a little bit,” Millard said. “That was very dangerous to see cars on each side of the road. If somebody steps out, then anybody could get hurt.”
Officials say the teen driver who put countless drivers in danger from Chesterfield had a 19-year-old passenger with him.
Police say the 17-year-old has been in Children’s Village since Saturday. He could be facing multiple felonies.
