Lakeside Mall closing: Share your memories, pictures!

What will you miss about the Sterling Heights mall?

Lakeside Mall in Sterling Heights (WDIV)

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – The once-bustling Lakeside Mall in Sterling Heights will soon close for good, and will be demolished not long after that.

The large indoor shopping mall that used to be buzzing with stores, shoppers, restaurants, events and more, will permanently close on July 1. The mall we used to know has been in decline over the past few years, with storefronts leaving amid the pandemic and as redevelopment plans were finalized.

The space where Lakeside Mall resides will be turned into what officials call a multi-use city center that will have residences, restaurants, shopping, parks and more. Groundbreaking on that project is expected to begin in late 2025.

But before we look forward, let’s take a look back.

Lakeside Mall opened in the 1970s, and for years was a destination for department store shopping, snacking, and even playing (there was once a water slide inside). The mall underwent some interior and exterior renovations over the years, but always maintained its Midwestern charm and array of fountains.

Speaking as someone who grew up in Macomb County, Lakeside is woven throughout my childhood memories -- and I’m sure I’m not alone.

Tell us: What memories do you have of Lakeside Mall? What things will you, or do you already, miss? Are you looking forward to the redevelopment?
