Lawsuit reveals more defendants in fatal Monroe County birthday party crash

Marshella Marie Chidester is still out on bond

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. – New legal action was taken in the crash that killed two children at a birthday party in Monroe County.

On Wednesday (May 1), lawyers provided more details about a new lawsuit and what they expect to occur next.

Local 4 knew that the civil lawsuit against Marshella Marie Chidester, 66, of Monroe, who is allegedly responsible for the incident, would add more plaintiffs.

But the suit now says that others took part, ultimately leading to the heartbreaking ordeal.

“The individuals involved in this incident who have survived, who were able to make it out alive, are going to be scarred for the rest of their lives,” said Attorney Jon Marko.

Marko says the aftermath of the terrible Swan Creek Boat Club accident in Monroe County is still affecting the victims.

Several are now joining the lawsuit featuring the family torn most with two deaths, the Dodds family.

“Many people there suffered post-concussion syndrome and a head injury,” Marko said. “The way that this building is set up in relationship to the road where people are driving to and from is a hazard.”

Verna’s Tavern is also another defendant named.

“If you serve an intoxicated person and they go and they do exactly what occurred in this case and they go out and they hurt someone, you share as the liquor establishment in liability that is caused,” Marko said.

No one was available to comment from Swan Boat Club or Vernor’s Tavern. Chidester is still out on bond.
