WARREN, Mich. – The family of a woman who was hurt Tuesday after falling through her apartment floor in Warren says management knew about issues with the floor.

On Tuesday, April 30, a 50-year-old woman fell through the floor of her first-floor apartment at the Warren Manor Apartment. The woman’s leg fell through the floor, where a hole opened up to the basement below.

“We couldn’t get her out, so we called the fire department,” said Darlene Moltrie, the injured woman’s mother. “They had to go get an ax.”

Firefighters rescued the woman from the hole. Paramedics took her to the hospital, where she was being treated for her injuries.

Moltrie said the soft spots in the floor had been a problem since the woman moved in last summer. She pointed out to Local 4 several areas in the apartment where there were soft spots in the floor.

According to Moltrie, movers were the first people to point out the issues with the floor. Since moving in, Moltrie said their family complained to management multiple times about the floor, but nothing has been done.

“They knew about it,” Moltrie said.

Local 4 reached out to Warren Manor Apartments by phone and email, but did not hear back as of Wednesday morning.

A spokesperson from the city of Warren told Local 4 that they are working to obtain more information about how the city responds to such a situation, and should have more information to share soon.

Warren mayor’s statement

Warren Mayor Lori Stone issued the following statement on Tuesday, May 1.

[T]he city is aware of the matter and is doing its due diligence. On Tuesday, March 30, 2024, it was reported by a local television station that a Warren Manor tenant had partially fallen through her apartment floor. Her leg reportedly went through a soft spot. The Warren Fire Department responded to the 911 call. Although Warren paramedics determined the tenant did not need medical attention, they honored her request to be transported to the hospital.

The city’s rental department inspects apartment buildings every two years, in accordance with the State of Michigan requirements. The last inspection was March 22, 2024. Warren Manor met the requirements of the inspection.

Warren Manor Apartments underwent a change of ownership in October of 2023, and has been under new management. The complex has been undergoing renovations and no complaints about structural integrity have been reported to the City of Warren.

As a result of Tuesday’s report, the Warren Building Department out of an abundance of caution, will be deploying inspectors to conduct safety inspections.
